Originally intended as a replacement for the Hurricane the Typhoon entered service in September 1941 however its rate of climb and performance at altitude were regarded as very poor. Early problems with structural fatigue and engine failures were eventually resolved and the Typhoons superb performance as a low level fighter interceptor and fighter bomber became its strength. In November 1941 operating from RAF Manston 609 Squadron were responsible for halting the high speed hit and run raids by Fw 190’s on southern England coastal installations. The Typhoon IB featured prominently throughout the rest of the war, in early 1944 609 Squadron were responsible for destroying 100 locomotives for the loss of only two aircraft the aircraft also played a major part in the D-Day landings. The aircraft featured R7684 was flown by Wing Cdr John Grandy CO of the Duxford Wing comprising 56, 266 & 609 Squadrons in 1942.
